Diggles Needs A Great Loving Home
Diggles is the good ending to a tragic tale.
Back on January 2, 2010 during a windy / snowy (about 8inches of snow on
ground) / cold night (wind chill sub-zero), we sent 5 AKK out for their bed time
run....within minutes we realized that a couple of vertical slats of our
privacy fence had blown out in the wind. Three of the AKK were
right around and came in....BUT HORRIFYINGLY Sonata's two sons Liggles
(LG) and Diggles (DG) were missing.
Frank and I bundled up and started searching for the missing 8month old
brothers.....Frank found Diggles laying in a snow bank with an obvious injury to his
hind leg. Tragically, Liggles is still missing and we will never
stop looking for him....sigh....

Diggles had badly fractured his femur (thigh bone) |
Fortunately with surgery (7 screws and a plate to reconnect his bones)

and 2 months of strict confinement, followed by 4 months of slowly reducing the
level of confinement and slowly increasing the level of exercise......The
good news is that since the fracture was mid-femur and the plating and
screws do not come that close to either hip or stifle joint, it's
unlikely although not impossible that he'll be more prone to arthritis
developing in that leg than any other AKK who never fractured their
femur.
Diggles has recovered and will make a wonderful
companion for a very special person / family willing / able to spend a
lot of time dealing with a sweet boy with some special needs.
Some of Diggles good and not-so-good current traits:
-
He's 99.5% housebroken which is the best rating I give any dog...but
if he has to go and cannot get out....he'll go on newspaper.
-
He's crate trained. Sleeps in crate, eats in crate and is use
to being crated whenever we are not home.
-
He's very vocal (more barky) than I prefer, but, therefore, is a
great watch / alert dog.
-
He behaves more like a 6month pup than a young adult.....he still
likes to chew on buttons and anything left lying about.
-
He loves to give kisses but his idea of approaching one to kiss is
sort of open mouthed so it is a tad intimidating....but he's never
nipped when giving kissing
-
He's a bit mouthy as far as when trying to get one to pet
him.....mouth over hand / arm again not to nip just to attempt to
drawn one's hand to petting him and away from petting others in our
pack.
-
He's the master of the you-can't-catch-me game which is typical for
all AKK
-
He's leash trained but needs a lot of socializing in crowds, around
other people, and around other dogs / animals.
-
He's not a super cuddlier but loves lying near his person and
getting petted / stroked.....but stiffens when put into a submissive
position like being cradled like a baby.
-
He's a butt-bopper.....he's so excited to be with us, that he
follows us from room to room....jumping up behind us and bopping our
butt.
-
He's had little exposure to children, but with patience and training
both Diggles and the children....I believe he is both
bite-inhibited enough and has a gentle enough temperament to learn
to accept children. Although like all AKK, he shrinks away
when people he doesn't trust try to pet the top of his head.
-
While we own a cat.....currently 15yrs old....back when we got our
first AKK, our cat made a decision that she didn't like AKK.
Currently our cat lives in our master suite and our AKK other than
when they are very young pups (between 3 and 5 weeks), our AKK at
that time get hissed at but that ends of their interaction with our
cat. IMO, the cat defines the relationship between cat and
dog.....Cats that stand up for themselves will earn the respect of
the AKK.....cats that run become self-propelled squeak toys.
-
Despite his one tragic and previously documented escape from our
backyard, Diggles does not appear to be either a digger or jumper or
committed to being an escape artist.
-
Like all AKK, Diggles has a well developed instinctive prey-drive
sense and ability. He's caught birds as they take off in
flight as well as rabbits and baby groundhogs that were stupid
enough to come through our fence into a yard which basically houses
a pack of wolves. This prey-drive is one reason why AKK should
never be allowed offlead. If an AKK sees something to
chase....regardless of training....there's a good chance that
hunting (prey drive) instinct will overcome training and the prey
might make it across a street....the chasing AKK might get hit by a
car.
Many or at least some of these less than positive traits will likely
fade away when he's in a smaller pack situation....remember we live with
9 AKK in our house....so they all compete for attention.
So if you have room in
your heart for a young adult AKK with a bunch of metal in his leg, who
missed out on a lot of socialization, and will need special love,
attention, and training.....
You might be the forever home for Diggles.
